Peer-Review Abstract
This monograph presents Neurobiological Cognitive Integration (NCI), a unified theoretical framework that reconceptualizes human temperament, individual behavioral variation, and clinical pathology as emergent properties of a single computational architecture: a multi-loop, precision-weighted, hierarchical predictive-processing system with autonomic and neurochemical implementation substrates. NCI integrates contemporary literatures from active inference (Friston), constructed emotion (Barrett), basal-ganglia and thalamic-reticular gating (Frank; O'Reilly; Halassa), interoceptive and saliency networks (Craig; Critchley), and evolutionary personality selection (Penke; Nettle) into a single coherent scaffold.
Under this framework, individual differences are coordinates in a continuous parameter space defined by precision-weighting profiles across a hierarchical predictive system, not discrete categorical types. Five stable phenotypic clusters—Sustained Persevering (SPP), Exploratory Novelty-Seeking (ENP), High-Dimensional Integrative (HIP), Adrenal-Sympathetic Impact (AIP), and Resonant Interoceptive (RIP)—emerge as density peaks (attractors) in this parameter space, accounting for the recurring profiles identified across legacy taxonomies (Cloninger TCI, Big Five, HEXACO, HSP). Clinical conditions traditionally classified as disorders (ADHD, Autism Spectrum, Sensory Processing Sensitivity) are reframed as dynamically unstable regions adjacent to specific phenotypic attractors—sharing the same gating mechanisms as healthy phenotypes but having lost regulatory stability.
The framework's Two-Axis Model distinguishes temperament (the precision-weighting prior) from cognitive complexity (the depth and breadth of the predictive hierarchy) as analytically separable parameters of the same computational system. This formal architecture is complemented by an experiential frame—the Steward as conscious-narrative observer-cultivator of an autonomous Inner Ecosystem. NCI's central empirical thesis posits that the conscious mind does not exert direct mechanical control over the autonomic nervous system but rather operates as a steward shaping the conditions under which the ANS's own predictive intelligence flourishes. The metaphor and the formalism are co-load-bearing, providing crucial bridging vocabulary between third-person neuroscience and first-person experience.
NCI is positioned explicitly within its theoretical lineage; genuinely novel contributions are enumerated; falsification criteria are specified; and multivariate operationalizations drawing on contemporary psychophysiological, neuroimaging, and computational-psychiatry methods are proposed. The framework is offered as a testable, hypothesis-generating scaffold designed to invite empirical validation across personality psychology, clinical neuroscience, and predictive-processing research programs.
